Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, identified by surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several entry passages leading to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their valour," Healey added. "They were part of a great many British personnel stationed over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate militants who threaten our security, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces conducted what it called a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
